Good morning social superstars!
January is fast coming to a close, but I hope the first month of the year has brought new experiences, new ideas and new hope for the future – it certainly has for me! And so, please enjoy this wide-ranging selection of social tools and topics I’ve come across or re-discovered in the past 2 weeks.
1. What I’m thinking about: Two thoughts on tax justice – Philanthropy and aid are all very well, but taxing the wealthiest and the global north is essential. Check out this viral 4-minute video of Rutger Bregman at Davos back in 2019 and this article on the fascinating development of a new UN Tax Convention. Both helped put this rather taxing issue more firmly on my agenda.
2. What I’ve experienced: Forest Therapy – This week I’ve been lucky to join a Forest Therapy session by Scott Pynton, founder of Earthworm Foundation. Spending time amongst trees and guided invitations to just be in nature was a gift. My favourite invitation of his: take 15 minutes to look for what’s in motion. Slow down. Wander. Look closely and entrance yourself in the macro and micro movements of our natural world.
3. What I’m building: A Phone Bed – We’re 1 week from the beginning of Phone Free February with 50+ participants from across 16 countries and 5 continents! One of our preparation tips is to create a Phone Bed for February: a dedicated place to leave your phone when at home to help you be more intentional with how and when you use your smartphone. My wonderful mum has already got hers ready!

4. What I’m using: The Best AI for the job – the AI market is exploding and it’s almost impossible to understand all the potential applications of AI let alone harvest them. I’ve recently discovered Future Tools – a easy-to-use database of AI tools for whatever job you need doing. Worth book-marking!
5. What I’m reading: Captive State: the corporate takeover of Britain – What a rich, scary read. Published in 2000, the book examines the corporate sell-off of Britain throughout the 90s under the Conservatives and New Labour. It is a saddening tale of a concerted attack on public spaces: town centres, universities, the NHS and countryside. Highly recommended!
