5 Bullet Friday - Jacob Warn

Wonderful world changers! šŸŒ

This bullet comes to you from a small side-street in Istanbul – and I hope the smell of cat piss doesn’t reach you too! It’ll be short and snappy with your usual fortnightly dose of social impact tools and treats I’ve come across or re-discovered. Please enjoy!

1. What I’m shocked by: Andrew Tate – The Man Who Groomed The World? – This 1-hour BBC documentary from the end of August is well worth the watch. The phenomenon of Andrew Tate passed me by, but this brought me up to speed. And horrified me.

2. What I’m smiling and in awe of: Leeds Animation WorkshopĀ – Just WOW! I discovered these as part of a BarcelonaĀ exhibition last week. As they introduce themselves: “Leeds Animation Workshop is a not-for-profit, cooperative company, run by women, which produces and distributes animated films and films on social and educational issues. The organisation began in 1976 as a group of women friends who came together to make a film about the need for pre-school childcare.” I justĀ loved their fairy-tale set – watch No OffenceĀ or Through the Glass Ceiling for some wonderfully astute social and gender criticism delivered with Alan Bennett’s voice to accompany.

3. What I’m sharing: Dirty Sponsorship for the Rugby World Cup – I’ve been getting stuck into Greenpeace campaigns and groups over the last weeks. This is a compelling campaign video, artfully made, that packs a punch!

4. What I’m questioning – Shouldn’t we all be paid the same? – I’ve ended up discussing pay scales recently with a number of friends. I am confused how, as a society, we pay such vastly different amounts for different jobs, when everyone’s time is surely equally valuable. I also believe that some of the lowest paid jobs are as – if not more – stressful than some of the highest paid jobs. Within an organisation, shouldn’t we just be paying everyone the same (though certainly adjusted for things such as childcare/illness)? Send me your thoughts and vote Yes or No by tapping one of these buttons (note: these buttons won’t take you anywhere but I’ll be able to see what you think.)

5. What I’m finding useful: Compiled resources on the UK Illegal Migration Act – This is a great set of resources and events on the UK government’s Illegal Migration Act, put together by Refugee Action. If you need to learn more, want to organise, or stay up to date – dive into this web page!
