Good afternoon solidarians! 🪧
This 5 Bullet Friday comes to you from sunny Spain where only cool vermouths and evening swims offer respite from the sun’s overly-generous embrace. Before you head off for the weekend, please find a little selection of 5 social tips, treats and talking points, all of which I’ve come across or re-discovered over the past fortnight. Enjoy!
1. What friends are creating: People with Ukraine – It’s funny how friends can surprise us. On a dog walk yesterday with Vasilis, he shared a project of his, set up in response to the Ukrainian invasion. I love a bit of classic ad-busting – such a humorous, visual yet brilliant way of sticking it to the multinationals.
2. What I’m reading: The Serviceberry – an economy of abundance – This gorgeous long-read, sumptuous and giving in its use of prose, is just perfect for kicking off the weekend. Brief synopsis: “As Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and ecological systems to reimagine currencies of exchange?“
3. What I’ve worked on: Reclaiming Lived Experience – mapping power and dismantling barriers – In April, I was invited by Freedom from Torture, the Refugee Council and Refugee Action to record the process and outcomes from their lived-experience led UK conference on pathways to power for those with lived experience in the UK’s migration sector. I’m delighted to share it with you all!
4. What I’m bookmarking: Ethical Alternatives & Resources – I’m always on the look out for alternatives: open-source over privatised, non-profit over profit etc. etc. This incredible list of ethical digital alternatives is my new go-to when wanting to make better choices. Can you challenge yourself to make one digital change?
5. What I’m exploring: Visualising Palestine – This website uses data and research to visually communicate Palestinian experiences to provoke narrative change. Some of their projects are jaw-dropping, especially the interactive ones: check out Killer AI and Remember their Names. Also a brilliant source for posters and campaigning.
That’s it for this fortnight! As ever, please let me know your thoughts and feedback – and send anything you’d like me to include in upcoming editions this way.
