5 Bullet Friday - Jacob Warn

Good morning social superstars! 💫

Before we get started, a quick invitation to check out my newly launched personal website, where you can find all previous 5 Bullet Fridays, as well as a range of other writing from over the years. You can visit it at jacobwarn.com

So, as we dive into the warm waters of May, I’m beaming with joy to be offering a return to the classic format of 5 social tips, treats and talking points this week, all of which I’ve come across or re-discovered over the past fortnight. Please enjoy!

1. What I’m gawping at: Featherless Chickens – I caught wind of this watching a screening of the fascinating new EU-focused documentary Food for Profit. I couldn’t believe genetically-modified featherless chickens were really a thing, designed to boost profits in the poultry industry. Thankfully, it hasn’t received widespread adoption, but even the notion!

2. What I’m reading: Entangled Life – I am only just getting into this, but I already have to share. This brilliant exploration of the world of fungi is shifting my most fundamental beliefs and perceptions of the world.

3. Quote I’m reflecting on: Baljet Sandhu on Lived Experience Leadership – “The heartbeat of the [lived experience leadership] concept comes from our ancestors: those on the hard edges of systems of oppression have always been drivers of positive change. Yet we’re often treated as informers of change [used for] stories, case studies and as subjects of investigations.”

4. What I’m wearingNatural World Shoes – When I don’t get shoes second hand, I get them from here. Natural World’s design, sustainability credentials and prices are unbeatable in my opinion. Comfy, a little whacky and colourful, 5 stars for these planet-loving shoes!

5. What I’m thinking about: The World in 2040 – I was lucky to be part of a high-level futures scenario-building conference last week. As things go, it’s not looking great. From increased localism driven by security threats, nationalism and supply chain disruption, to climate tipping points that will hasten destruction in vulnerable regions, we are reckoning with global climatic changes that will still have consequences even in a rapidly decarbonised world. 3 other things I learnt:

  1. There is a huge amount of heat trapped in the oceans, which will escape once we start cooling the atmosphere, but in turn actually raising temperatures still further.
  2. Arguably, the dominant migration system we know – one where people are kept safe, re-homed or repatriated –  is quite simply irrelevant in a world where over 1 billion people are on the move. What’s the alternative?
  3. Huge quantities of methane are trapped in the permafrost, which if melts will along cause a global temperature rise of 5-8°C. We can’t let it melt!
